Southern California Trip 2014
Sunday, October 12th

We landed at San Diego airport around ten in the morning. We drove to the vicinity of our Timeshare Trade and had lunch in a mall.

We then drove around looking for the St Louis Rey Mission. We toured it. It was named after King Luis IX of France, who led crusades to the Holy Land in the 13th century. It is located on a hill overlooking a peaceful valley at the native village of Tacayme in the region know as Quechia, about five miles east of present day Oceanside.
The San Luis Rey Church, completed in 1815, is the only surviving mission church laid out in a cruciform plan. It is 165.5 feet in length and the nave spans 27.5 feet in width by 30 feet in height.

The sunken garden and lavanderia (laundry), located in a hollow to the south of the mission may be reached by descending 46 fire tiled steps. Two springs provided water that sprouted from the mouths of sculpted gargoyles into the lavanderia. Click on the image of the church above to see our photos.

Grand Pacific Palisades ResortWe then made our way to theGrand Pacific Palisades Resort in Carlsbad, California. We didn't know it at the time, but we could have walked across the street ot Legoland from here. It is known more for being at an overlook point for their flower gardens that bloom in the spring. We took a nap until around 5:30, then ate dinner at a PF Chang nearby. The scallops dinner was very good.

Monday, October 13th

Today is Remy’s birthday so we went shopping. I bought some swim suits and some lime green jogging shirts that seem to be the rave these days. Later we ate at King’s Fish House in Carlsbad. By the literature we expected a very good seafood restaurant. The crowd there increased our expectations. However, for the Oysters Rockefeller, the chef substituted his local grown fresh horseradish for garlic. I did't think that was such a good substitute. I'm not sure "Oysters Rockefeller" actually described what we were served. The broiled trout was so so. Bottom line: It did not live up to it's reputation.

Tuesday, October 14
Drove up Mount Palomar to view the Palomar telescope. This turned out to be a rather long drive for a short visit. Remy stayed at the visitors center, while I walke up to the 200 inch Hale telescope. You can see the 200-inch Hale Telescope from the Visitors Gallery. The gallery includes a full-length window area providing a direct view of the telescope from the observing floor. Displays along the window describe the telescope's major components and foci, how the telescope moves to find an object and track it through the night, the structure of the 200-inch primary mirror, and the path light follows inside the telescope. There was a person there to point out all the features. It wasn't obvious what was scope and what was structure.
We stopped at the Casino on the way back and picked up chicken for dinner.

Wednesday, October 15
I swam in the resort's pool in the morning then took Remy to get hair done in the early afternoon. I dropped her off at the spa then did a short hike at the Batitiquitos Lagoon. The name means watering hole. It was rather dry it looked like one spark could start a huge fire.

Thursday,10/16
Went to Legoland. The park is across the street from the resort. We spent about 3 hours looking at various Lego creations. Pushed Remy on a wheelchair and took a lot of pictures.

Friday,10/17
Today was our shopping day. We drove around the Carlsbad main streets looking for the Carlsbad mall. Found mostly restaurants. Went back to the Paseo de norte mall. I bought a pair of running suits and short of green. I got a red iron man watch.

Saturday 10/18
Today we visited Amante. His daughter Ginger, her husband Anthony, and their children Anthony Jr, and Amanda joined us for lunch. Amante was able to get Marilou on the phone, and she joined us later. I inlcuded these pictures in the section called Miscellaneous to include other various individual pictures of the trip.

Sunday, 10/19
Went to church at Ginger’s church. We tried to follow Amante to Marilous, but we both went in circles for a bit. Eventually we found Marilou's aparment and had a very good meal of lasagna and pork belly. (See images in Miscellaneous section). On way back visited her other school mate, Virgilio. We ate again and left there stuffed to the ears.

Monday, 10/20
We did a Segway tour of Gas Light Market area of San Diego. Janolee was our guide. We took a little longer than the normal schedule. Remy went slower than plan, because it is a bit tougher than it looks.

Tuesday, 10/21
Drove to La Jolla area. Known for it's specialy shops. I left Remy off at Girard street and I made my way to Torrey Pines State Park. I walked most of the trails there. Many had great views of the Ocean. Lots of hot chicks from the University of California, San Diego, were jogging there. The Torrey pine reserve has a lot of pines on the north side. My first trails were on the southern side where it was a little more rocky and dry. I have few pictures where you can see the famous golf course.

Wednesday, 10/22
I needed a GPS this day, my co-pilot couldn't read the map. We drove in circles at La Jolla area looking for Mount Soledad. Finally found it. It is a Veterans Memorial with pretty good views of the city and ocean.
Since we managed Mt. Soledad without much co-pilot help, I decided to look for the Cabrillo Monument. That too took some searching. We were almost there when we arrived at a gate to a military base and turned around at the gate. Turned out we needed to pass through there. The monument has great views of the city and ocean. On site is an old lighthouse and military history display.
